In Full Bloom

Delicate miniature florals on fabric are like a breath of romance.

Floral prints for spring? As Miranda Priestley, a character in the iconic fashion movie, “ The Devil Wears Prada,” would say, “Not exactly groundbreaking!” But I must say with all that we’ve been through right now and last year, now more than ever, the spring floral trend represents hope, happier times and rebirth. Florals are synonymous with cheer and sunshine. Who couldn’t use a little of that? Spring style is always so feminine. Florals are all about having fun with fashion and embracing the joy and romance of the season. I don’t know when the global health crisis will be over but spring is here right before our eyes, although through the window in many cases.

We may be putting our Easter dresses on hold for now, but let’s hope not. Somehow the fashion world has managed to inspire us to always look forward to this beautiful time of year. In South Texas spring comes with breathtaking displays of wildflowers that make for incredibly inspirational scenic Hill Country drives. I must admit that when I get “dressed,” meaning out of my comfy lounge wear, I just feel better. So for now, spring fashion is all about something more thoughtful and realistic. Spending hours a day on a Zoom call still requires more than just a comfy chair. Maybe you’re just walking around your neighborhood or from the bedroom to your home office. If you’re looking for comfort but trying to dress up the usual yoga pants and a t-shirt, grab a pair of flowing floral lounge pants in a comfy fabric. Pair it with a basic tee for a look that’s as fashion-forward as it is comfy. If you really want to step up your fashion game, pair your floral dresses with a modern hiking or streamlined combat boot. The feminine florals paired with the more rugged footwear creates a sort of “ying and yang” vibe which translates into a very eye catching combination. It’s like pairing a very ladylike pastel pink with a steel, dark or charcoal gray. Think opposite color combinations like black and white. No wonder they look so good together. Believe it or not there IS something different about this years fashion garden of flowers compared to the past florals for spring. In the previous seasons, it was all about bold, large, graphic, floral prints. Some floral prints were even life-size! The look was NOT for the fashion wallflowers or those timid at heart. Maybe it’s just simply not the taste of some fashionistas who prefer solids to bold patterns. Anyway, the difference is that this year’s floral bouquet explosion is all about the “ditsy” print. (This is a very small floral print in a constant repeating pattern.) It can be very subtle and elegant depending on the cut and style of the garment.

No matter how your garden grows, the epitome of feminine glam is back once again. True tea dresses with tiny florals were seen on practically every virtual runway! Wear them with confidence and make the look your own. The pattern mixing combinations are endless.

Happy Spring!
